
Keydets Break Records on Day 1 of AE Championships
Worcester, Mass. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams broke three school records Thursday on the first day of competition at the four-day 2019 America East Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
The Keydet men’s 200-yard medley relay team of Stephen Hopta, Ryan Cooper, Ryan Schmitz and Brady Gannon set the school record with a third-place finish in 1:33.73. The team of Thomas Muldowney, Jacob Smilie, Nick Palmieri and Hopta took third in the 800-yard free relay in 6:56.28 to break the all-time mark.
The third record-breaking performance was in the women’s 200-medley relay as Morgan Davis, Sarah McDougall, Carisa Kunkle and Laura Payne now own the school’s top time of 1:33.73.
Day 2 events begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with trials in the men’s and women’s 500-yard freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50-yard freestyle and men’s 3-meter diving. Finals in nine events start at 5:30 p.m. The Championships can be streamed live all weekend long on AmericaEast.TV.
