COLUMBIA, S.C. – Seeking qualifying marks for the postseason, the VMI track and field teams saw several individuals accomplish the task Saturday at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
James Granderson earned an IC4A qualifying time in the 110m hurdles by placing seventh in the finals with a time of 14.80 seconds. He advanced to the finals by way of his fourth-place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 14.86 seconds.
Freshman Jordin Poindexter ran a 100m dash time of 10.9 seconds to qualify for the IC4A Championships next month
The men’s 4x100 relay team of Chris Ferrill, Poindexter, Caleb Minus and Blaine Ashton ran an IC4A qualifying time of 41.93 for 10th overall in the field. The mark ranks third on the Southern Conference list to this point of the season.
“Today went about as well as can be expected,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “You won’t ever have everything go perfect, and we had a couple athletes that came out today sore, or had other minor issues. Overall we added seven more participants to the IC4A list, and we moved up in the conference in almost every event we competed in today.”
Griffin Kowal earned a height of 4.75 meters in the men’s pole vault, or 15’7”, to rank No. 2 on the SoCon list for the event. Granderson also competed in the long jump and earned a distance of 6.91 meters, or 22’8.25.”
Ariana Ruffin ran a personal record by over .5 seconds in the 200 meter dash, 24.83 seconds, to move to No. 6 on the SoCon list for the event.
Freshman Ahliyah Williams ran a 57.63 in the women’s 400 meter, while Rafael Mas (49.96) and Jonathan Gray (50.22) competed in the event on the men’s side.
Up in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, men’s distance runner Jahanzib Shahbaz ran a 3:53.87 in the 1500m race – 4th on the SoCon list – to earn an IC4A qualifying time.
Competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic resumes Sunday.
