SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI’s Donovan Walton and Bria Anderson have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women's outdoor field athletes of the week, respectively, according to information announced by the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from May 2-8. They are the final selections of the 2018 season.
Walton took fifth in the javelin at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 2, turning in a throw of 55.47 meters (182 feet) to add three meters to his personal record. That mark is third on the SoCon performance list this season and moves the senior from Stephens City, Virginia, into fifth place in school history in the event. This is the first weekly honor of his career.
Anderson won the long jump at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on May 2. The senior from Richmond, Virginia, turned in a leap of 5.85 meters (19 feet, 2.5 inches), a seasonal best for the second straight meet. Her mark lifted her into a three-way tie atop the SoCon performance list this season. The weekly award is the second of Anderson’s outdoor career.
The SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin Thursday in Cullowhee, N.C., and a preview will be posted on VMIKeydets.com Wednesday afternoon.
