VMI Men’s Soccer at Belmont Saturday
LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men’s soccer team plays an all-important game Saturday (2 p.m.) at Belmont College in the Southern Conference finale for both teams.
The winner of the match earns the #6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and hosts the loser in a first-round match on Wednesday.

About the Keydets (1-14-1/0-5 SoCon): VMI came up just short Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to Wofford College. The visiting Terriers had a 2-0 lead with eight minutes remaining until freshman midfielder Logan Pheng blasted a shot just inside the box into the bottom left corner of the net after ricocheting off the post. Wofford knocked in an insurance goal a few minutes later.
About the Bruins (2-11-2/0-4-1 SoCon): Matteo Bennati has 11 points (4G, 3A) while Ares Marlonsson is right behind him with 10 points (3G, 4A). Niccolo Dagnoni and Adam Voloder each have three goals and an assist.
Nicolo Dini has started 14 of the team’s 15 matches in goal. He has 67 saves, a .257 goal-against average and a .644 save percentage.
Notable: Belmont assistant coach Mark Carr was a four-year letterwinner at VMI (2003 graduate) where he was team captain and earned Southern Conference All-Academic honors.
Series History: VMI and Belmont are 1-1-1 all-time against each other, with the last encounter in 2011. This is Belmont’s first season in the Southern Conference.
