FARMVILLE, Va. - Behind a career-high two goals from senior forward David Wright, the VMI men's soccer team drew a 2-2 tie with host Longwood Friday night in the 2017 season opener at Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Virginia.

Down 1-0 at the half, the Keydets battled early on when junior defender Sohrab Shaikh took a shot at the Lancer goal. The ball was deflected and rebounded by Wright, who took his own shot and found the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1 with just over 30 minutes remaining.

After Longwood's Marten Pajunurm put the Lancers back up, 2-1, with a goal in the 74th minute, Wright again responded at the 84:11 mark with a header from a deep cross from freshman defender Richard Quispe.

"We were pleased as a coaching staff with our performance tonight," said VMI head coach Michael Bonelli. "Our team battled for 110 minutes and never quit. That is the mentality we are going to have as a program. We are going to battle and compete every time we step on the field.

"We came down from a goal twice and had a few chances to win in overtime. We are never satisfied with a tie, but I believe we will learn from this performance and it will help us have success down the road."

Wright now has three career goals as a Keydet as he last scored a goal as a sophomore in 2015.

Senior goalkeeper Jon Harrington played the full 110 minutes for the Keydets and logged seven saves in the effort after facing 23 Lancer shot attempts. The Keydets countered with 10 shots, including five from Wright and two from freshman Christopher McGhan. Freshmen Pa-Alieu Ann, Jessie Zavala and Quispe also registered one shot apiece.

The Lancers' Max Poelker took seven shots at the VMI net, while keeper Lance Da Silva tallied three saves in a complete game.

The Keydets return to the pitch Tuesday night when they travel to Liberty to face the Flames in a 7 p.m. tilt in Lynchburg, Virginia.
