CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Facing one of the top teams in the country, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 24-5 score to the No. 6-ranked Cavaliers of the University of Virginia Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville.
The Keydets (4-7) struggled from the start as the Cavaliers jumped to a 14-1 lead by the end of the opening period. The Keydets tightened up in the second quarter but the Hoos still picked up an additional eight goals in the stanza to go up by a 22-3 margin at the half. Josh Bass, Aidan Riley and Michael Santos scored goals for the Keydets in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter and put in two goals apiece in the fourth quarter for the final result of the game. Bass scored again for the Keydets while Donald Proper added a goal, as well.
The Cavaliers were paced by seven goals from Xander Dickson while Ian Laviano and Matt Moore each scored a trio.
VMI returns to action Saturday at noon to face the (RV) Air Force Academy for Senior Day in a Southern Conference battle at Drill Field No. 2.
