LEXINGTON, Va. - Trailing just 8-6 at the half, the VMI lacrosse team was overcome by eight Jacksonville goals in the third quarter to allow the Dolphins to escape with a 19-9 victory over the Keydets on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

The Keydets (4-6, 0-5) were down by three goals with 14 seconds before the half, but sophomore Eric Lane scored his first goal of the season with just one second on the board after scooping up a groundball and slinging it into the Dolphin net. The score provided some momentum for VMI heading into the break down just two goals.

The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Dolphins (4-8, 3-2) rallied in the third quarter to score eight goals while allowing just two for the Keydets during the stanza. The Keydets trailed by just one goal one minute in the second half following a goal by senior John O'Donnell, but the Dolphins went on a 5-0 run over the ensuing five minutes to go up 13-7.

After Lane scored his second goal with four minutes left in the third, Jacksonville again went on a 5-0 run to end the period and the first few minutes of the fourth to build an insurmountable lead 18-9 lead.

The Dolphins won the groundball battle 21-9, but especially the first and third periods by claiming eight of nine in the first and 9 of 10 in the third.

Johnny Daniel led the Keydets with three goals on the day while Jonathan Fant and Lane each registered two. John O'Donnell and Josh Bass scored the other two goals for VMI.

Jacksonville's Evan Tyler was credited with a game-high four goals while Dwayne Mattushik and Jack Dolan both had three. Brendan McKenna earned seven assists in the win.

The Keydets quickly return to action Tuesday for an in-state matchup on the road at No. 4 Virginia at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville.

Next Saturday, April 20 will serve as Senior Day and home finale when VMI faces SoCon opponent Air Force Academy at noon at Drill Field No. 2.
