HAMPTON, Va. - Looking to snag its fourth win of the season, the VMI lacrosse team accomplished the feat by cruising past host Hampton University by a 23-9 score Saturday afternoon in Hampton, Virginia.
The victory brings the Keydets to 4-4 on the season as VMI secured its fourth win of the year to mark the most wins in a season since the 2012 campaign. The four wins also doubles the amount of victories the Keydets have earned in each of the past three seasons to reflect the progression of the program under head coach Jon Birsner.
"I'm really proud of our whole team," Birsner said. "This great team effort started at the beginning of the week. I felt like we strung together some of our best practices since I’ve been at VMI this past week and that’s a credit from our upper class leadership to our young guys on the scout team. Guys were competing and hungry to fix our mistakes and get back in the winning column.
"Being 4-4 going into April is a position this program hasn’t been in for awhile. We need to learn from this past week and what got us here and use our experience to head to a very good Bellarmine team on Saturday ready to put together another whole team effort."
VMI got off to a quick start by jumping ahead 7-0 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 14-1 at the half. The Keydets eased up in the second half but still outscored the Pirates by a 9-8 tally en route to the win.
Twelve different Keydets scored throughout the game including a team goal when Hampton suffered an own goal early in the opening period. Ryan Perouty, Aidan Riley, Timothy Barile and Josh Drake each scored three goals apiece for the Keydets to account for half of VMI's goal tally. Josh Bass and Johnny Daniel both scored a pair, while John O'Donnell, Kyle Walsh, Isaac Smith, Austin Hughes, Ian Baker and AJ Krstulovic all scored one.
The game was an opportunity for several players to see their first live action of the season to earn game experience.
VMI returns to Southern Conference action next Saturday on the road where the Keydets will face Bellarmine at 1 p.m. in Louisville, Kentucky.
