MACON, Ga. – Getting back into conference play after last week’s victory over Hampton, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 15-7 score to Mercer Saturday afternoon at Five Star Stadium in Macon, Georgia.
The Keydets (2-7, 0-4) kept pace with the Bears (4-7, 2-2) through the first half as the game was tied at two after the first quarter and trailed by just a point, 5-4, at the half. The Bears pulled away, however, in the second half by scoring five goals in both the third and fourth quarters while allowing only three more Keydet goals.
VMI outshot the Bears by a 42-40 count throughout the game, won 19 of 25 faceoffs and won the groundball battle but could not overcome 21 turnovers as Mercer pulled away for the win.
Freshman Ryan Perouty led VMI with three points by way of two goals and an assist to spur the offense while John Daniel also put in two goals. Jon Fant and Jonathan Durham scored the other goals and John O’Donnell, Wesley Sanders and Tim Barile were each credited with an assist in the match. Daniel led the team with 10 shot attempts while Durham achieved his first goal of the season and fifth of his VMI career.
AJ Krstulovic won 18 of 23 faceoffs to dominate in the trench and Tristan Capes-Davis took one of two.
Mercer’s Matt Quinn led the Bears with four goals on the day and Pascal Coombs added three. Eight other Bears scored solo goals throughout the game. Goalie Bradley Hodoval earned the win in a complete game as he earned 12 saves while VMI’s Bill Osteen was given the loss despite 13 saves.
The Keydets continue Southern Conference action Friday night as they travel to High Point, North Carolina for a 7 p.m. tilt with the High Point Panthers.
