LEXINGTON, Va. - After a summer of training and conditioning, the VMI cross country teams will begin their 2018 season Friday at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia.
With the meet taking place at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course, the women will race a 4K at 6 p.m. before the men compete at 6:30 p.m. in a 6K race.
The men will be led by senior Kyle Sabourin, who paced the squad to a fifth-place finish at the 2017 SoCon Championship race by placing 17th overall. Carlos Fernandes and Jackson Betts also return to the team after earning top-five finishes for the team at the conference meet. Adam Roberto and Jake Mazziotta also return having competed at the SoCon meet a year ago. VMI will be without the services of star runner Jay Broom, who graduated in May.
The women are led by junior Logan Luckett, who led the team at the SoCon Championship last year with a 26th-place finish at the event. Sophomore Anna Armfield and junior Kathleen Yates had top-five finishes for the team at last year's SoCon meet and look for repeat success in 2018. Junior Isabela Melendez also returns having competed at the league race last fall.
