NEW MARKET, Va. - True freshman Logan Luckett finished 11th overall to lead the VMI women's cross country team at the JMU Open, contested Saturday morning at New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va.
Luckett crossed the line in 20:32.10 to earn her result, and become only the third freshman woman to serve as VMI's top finisher in back to back races in the past 10 years. VMI's top three was the same as the previous week's season opener, as Bethany King finished 25th in 21:33.30 and Sadie Sandifer was 32nd in 22:24.40 on the 5,200-meter course.
As a team, the Keydets finished fourth of the six schools competing at the meet won easily by host James Madison.
"Logan Luckett ran strong today, and Bethany King also ran a great race," said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "The conditions were very challenging, with temperatures approaching 90 and high humidity. Our teams seemed to handle that very well. Our women's team has a lot of potential this season, and I think they will be very good in the coming weeks."
The rest of VMI's top five finishers included Isabela Melendez (33rd/22:34.90) and Kennedy Flynn (36th/23:31.70), while Christina Hill (46th/24:28.30), Riley Neary (49th/25:15.80), Brittany Szczepanik (53rd/26:39.80) and Kathleen Yates (56th/27:57.40) rounded out the Keydets in action Saturday.
VMI cross country will return to action Friday, Sept. 16 at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite in Blacksburg.
