BOONE, N.C. - Logan Luckett finished 21st overall in her first collegiate race, helping the VMI women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Covered Bridge Open, contested Friday in Boone, N.C.
Luckett was VMI's #1 runner over the 5K distance, crossing the line in 19:20.66 to finish 21st. Luckett is the first true freshman to serve as VMI's top finishing woman in a race since the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
Overall, VMI finished sixth in the team standings with 176 points. The Florida Gators dominated the meet, easily besting second-place Appalachian State 28-49. The Keydets were one spot behind fifth-place ETSU, which recorded 137 markers.
Other VMI finishers on the day included Bethany King (20:36.17/50th), Luckett's classmate Sadie Sandifer (20:54.65/54th), Isabela Melendez (21:23.76/60th) and Kelly Russell (21:46.43/65th). Three of VMI's top five runners were true freshmen, while the Keydet lineup was wrapped up by Kennedy Flynn (22:10.62/70th), Christina Hill (22:28.36/75th) and Kathleen Yates (22:54.02/82nd).
"Logan Luckett ran strong at number one for us today," stated VMI head cross country coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "Our women's team has improved its depth tremendously this summer and the squad members are now challenging each other in practices and for travel positions to meets. I am looking forward to seeing many successes out of them this year."
VMI cross country will return to action Sept. 10, when VMI takes part in the JMU Open in New Market, Va. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
