CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Jay Broom finished 12th overall, earning Second Team All-SoCon honors and helping the VMI men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the SoCon Cross Country Championships, contested Saturday at Camp Jordan in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Broom crossed the line in 24:35 over the 8K course, ensuring that VMI would have an all-conference honoree in each of its three years since rejoining the league. Brandon White (18th/24:53) and Ryan Drew (22nd/25:02) rounded out VMI's top three finishers, with Drew earning all-freshman team honors.

As a team, the Keydets finished four points behind fourth-place Chattanooga and 24 shy of third-place ETSU. Furman won the meet for the fourth straight year (22 points), while Samford was second in the standings.

"Our teams raced very well today, with 15 total runners posting personal bests," said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "Jay Broom has showed remarkable improvement from last year to earn Second Team All-SoCon honors, and I am very proud of the progress that both he and Brandon White showed this season. I'm also thankful to Brandon and Luke Phillips for their efforts and leadership in their final SoCon Cross Country meet. We have started the process of building some great recruiting classes."

VMI's other finishers included Kyle Sabourin (25th/25:05), Micah Ellington (42nd/25:41), Justin Adams (47th/25:48), Luke Phillips (54th/26:00), Jahanzib Shabaz (56th/26:07) and Tripp Fitch (60th/26:23).

Frank Lara of Furman won the individual title.

"Coach Ludtke and both of our teams have worked hard and improved throughout the season, and today was no different," said VMI's director of track and field and cross country Darrin Webb. "Over 88 percent of our runners had seasonal or lifetime bests today. Coach Ludtke got them prepared and both teams raced hard, to 25:03 (men's) and 18:58 (women's) averages, the lowest we have had in recent years."

VMI cross country will return to action, and wrap up its season, Nov. 11 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
