LEHIGH, Pa. - Jay Broom and Brandon White both recorded 8K personal bests, helping the VMI men's cross country team to a solid afternoon at the Paul Short Run Saturday in Lehigh, Pa.
Saturday's events included three races over the 8K distances, and Broom lead the way for VMI by finishing in 133rd place in the gold division and clocking in at 25:08. White finished 150th in that race and was across the line in 25:11. Both runners ran a conservative first mile - 5:05 and 5:04 respectively - before moving up throughout the race.
"We had 13 of our 15 total competitors post PR's today," said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "Our athletes on both sides have been showing up to practice and supporting each other through extremely challenging workouts. Our practices have been much better in recent weeks, so we hoped for - and got - good performances today. I am consistently impressed with the work and desire of the athletes in these programs."
The other Keydet finishers on the day included Ryan Drew (25:51/247th), Luke Phillips (26:03/272nd), Justin Adams (26:12/288th), Micah Ellington (26:16/294th), Jahanzib Shabaz (26:32/308th) and Tripp Fitch (27:24/332nd). All, with the exception of Fitch, recorded personal best efforts, with Phillips surpassing a PR that had stood since his freshman season of 2013.
VMI did not enter two-time All-SoCon honoree Avery Martin in the event.
VMI cross country will return to action Oct. 14, when the Keydets take part in the HPU Vert XC Invitational in Kernersville, N.C.
