LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – After a few weeks away from competition, the VMI wrestling team had several team members compete well at the Lock Haven Classic Friday in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

Facing the likes of Bucknell, Old Dominion, George Mason and host Lock Haven, the Keydets placed fifth at the open tournament with 22 points during the day.

VMI was led by senior 133-pounder Hunter Starner, who opened with a 3-1 decision over Bucknell’s David Campbell before pinning Messiah College’s Hunter Harris in 6:54. He fell in the championship bout to Old Dominion’s Steve Simpson by a 15-0 technical fall.

Sophomore 197-pounder Max Gallahan came in fourth place in his weight class following two decision wins. In the opening round, he defeated Messiah’s Karrington Washington by a 4-0 decision before falling to Bucknell’s Garrett Hoffman by a pin in 1:06. He then topped George Mason’s Eli Spencer by a 5-0 decision but was defeated in the third-fourth place match by Messiah’s Kyle Koser by fall in 46 seconds.

Wrestling unattached at 141, redshirt freshman Dom Gallo came in second place after falling by a 6-4 decision to Bucknell’s Matthew Kolonia in the championship bout.

Junior 149-pounder Stevan Smith earned a pair of decision wins during the day to show well for the Keydets at the tourney.

The Keydets return to action next Saturday, Jan. 6, as several team members will compete at the W&L Invitational in Lexington.
