LEXINGTON, Va. – With the regular season complete, the VMI men’s soccer team begins a new slate Saturday when they face the Furman Paladins in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference tournament. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
The No.6 seeded Keydets (0-15-2, 0-10) are coming off a 7-0 defeat to Mercer last Saturday on Senior Day in the regular season finale at Patchin Field. The Bears led by just a 2-0 score at the half but exploded for five second-half goals to top the home team.
Furman, a No. 3 seed, enters the match with momentum after topping UNCG Sunday by a 1-0 score in overtime.
In their two previous matchups this season, the Keydets opened conference play at Furman on Sept. 26 with a 4-0 loss and most recently faced the Paladins at home on Oct. 14, a 5-0 loss.
VMI senior David Wright and freshman Willson Tuck lead the Keydets with two goals on the year while Christopher McGhan, Cooper Duplantis, Richard Quispe and Sohrab Shaikh each have one assist.
On Friday, Nov. 10, No. 1 seed ETSU will take on the Wofford-Mercer winner while No.2 seed UNCG will face the VMI-Furman winner for the semifinals in Greenville, South Carolina. The SoCon title game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. in Greenville.
