LEXINGTON, Va. - Playing at home for a second consecutive conference match, the VMI men's soccer team fell by a 5-0 score to visiting Furman Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Paladins (8-4-2, 2-2-2) showed aggression from the beginning of the match, firing off a few shots before connecting in the fifth minute for a goal when Josiah Baker took a cross deep from Rocky Guerra in the VMI box and slid the ball into the net.

In a moment of confusion midway through the first half, the Paladins were given an indirect kick just 10 feet away from the VMI goal and took advantage as Danny Kierath tapped it over to Laurence Wyke, who shot it into the middle upper net for a 2-0 Furman advantage. The Paladins would go on to score three more goals in the second half for the game's final result. Wyke and Baker struck again, while Aigbekan Nosegbe scored his first goal of the year.

VMI (0-11-2, 0-6) was limited in its shot opportunities throughout the match as Kasey Perea fired one early in the first half and the Keydets were not allowed any other shots. The Paladins totaled 33 shot attempts, including 19 on goal, to keep VMI keeper Robert Allen occupied. Allen would log a season-high 14 saves during the match, the second most of his career since recording 15 in a game last year at UNCG.

Baker finished the match with six shot attempts for the Paladins with Wyke contributing five. Jonathan Smith earned the start at goalie for the Paladins as he logged his first win of the season.

VMI returns to the pitch Tuesday with a SoCon game at ETSU. Kickoff is set for a 7 p.m. start in Johnson City, Tennessee.
