LEXINGTON, Va. - With the start of Southern Conference play underway, the VMI lacrosse team fell by an 18-12 score in a high-scoring battle with the Richmond Spiders Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

The Keydets (1-4, 0-1) stayed within striking distance of the Spiders (3-3, 1-0) the entire match before faltering in the fourth quarter when Richmond outscored VMI by an 8-4 count. The Keydets were down just 3-2 after the opening period and trailed 7-5 at the half before both teams scored three goals in the third period. Sophomore John Daniel recorded seven goals during the game, breaking a Southern Conference single game record and tied for third all-time for a single game in the VMI record book. The last time the feat was accomplished was 13 years ago when Leo McInerney tallied seven versus Robert Morris on March 12, 2005.

"I thought our guys matched their intensity and it was a good lacrosse game for the first 50 minutes," said VMI head coach Jon Birsner. "Playing a top SoCon team within two goals for most of the time shows our progress but we need to continue to focus on our development and fundamentals to limit our mistakes.

"Johnny Daniel did a great job getting to the goal today and shooting hard. He’s been working really hard and I was happy to see him playing with confidence out there."

Freshman Ryan Perouty added another two scores to bring his season total to 10 while sophomore Donald Proper and junior Austin Hughes scored their first goals of the season. The goal from Proper was the second of his VMI career while Hughes scored his third career goal. Perouty was credited with two assists while Wesley Sanders registered a season-high three.

The Spiders were led by three goals apiece from Ryan Lanchbury, Teddy Hatfield and Eric Haehl while Layne Collins and Austin Brown each had two. Five others logged individual scores throughout the game.

Richmond's Blake Goodman was credited with two saves in the win to improve to 3-3 while VMI's Bill Osteen falls to 1-4 despite 13 saves.

The Keydets return to action on the road next Saturday at Southern Conference opponent Air Force Academy. Faceoff is slated for a noon start in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
