Mission Statement:

The VMI Cadet-Athlete Development Office’s mission is to foster the character, intellectual and academic development of Virginia Military Institute NCAA cadet-athletes beginning with their transitional experience and culminating with their graduation from the Institute through programming which seeks to engender the values of self-advocacy, independent learning and ownership of their educational opportunities.

Our office accomplishes the VMI Mission and Cadet-Athlete Development Office Mission by:

  1. Assisting cadet-athletes in reaching academic, career, military, and life goals
  2. Developing cadet-athlete life skills in all facets possible
  3. Being an additional academic resource for cadet-athletes and help encourage engagement in the Corps of Cadets
  4. Helping foster cadet-athlete ownership of their educational opportunities
  5. Maintaining VMI and NCAA Eligibility Standards

Tutoring Services:

Tutoring is essential to the efforts in the Cadet-Athlete Development Office. Tutors are provided for one-on-one and/or group study sessions in traditionally difficult core curriculum courses. We offer individual tutoring or group tutoring in our offices. We also utilize the Miller Academic Center for Guided Study Session – or group study sessions across post. Our tutors are graduates or high-achieving undergraduates of the surrounding Lexington community in the discipline or course in which they tutor.

Tutoring is free and available upon request per our Tutor Coordinator and our tutors use Socratic methodology to foster independent learning skills to mimic that of classroom instruction.

The Cadet-Athlete Tutoring Program Focuses on:

• Fostering Skill Development

• Encouraging Critical Thinking

• Promoting the Socratic Method for independent learning

• Collaboration post wide with Faculty & Staff at VMI

Retention Programs:

The Rat-Athlete Transitional Program (Every Fall)

• Consists of weekly meetings with athletic advisor or assistant athletic advisor

• A twice-weekly evening guided study session and additional subject specific tutoring as needed

• Focus on helping rat cadet-athletes and/or first year transfer cadet-athletes with transitional issues such as: time management, organization, note taking, goal setting, and effective studying. These meetings are individual and serve as an early warning system. By getting weekly academic feedback from cadet-athletes, the academic advisor can identify and address potential academic setbacks and be proactive in the holistic approach to helping immerse our rat cadet-athletes into the VMI system. The goal of these weekly meetings is to encourage academic engagement and create access to the full range of academic services the VMI campus has to offer.

The At-Risk Program (Fall and Spring)

• Mandatory for any cadet-athlete whose cumulative GPA drops below a 2.25 or passes less than 12 hours the previous academic term

• Consists of weekly meetings with athletic advisor or assistant athletic advisor

• A twice-weekly evening guided study session and additional subject specific tutoring as needed

• Focus on issues such as: time management, organization, note taking, goal setting, and effective studying
