BOONE, N.C. – Facing an Appalachian State squad that recently took down league favorite Campbell, the VMI wrestling team came up short as the Mountaineers cruised to an easy 46-5 victory Wednesday night at Varsity Gym in Boone, North Carolina.
With the match starting at 157 pounds, App State’s Angel Najar put the Mounties up, 6-0, with a pin over Steven Midkiff in 3:26. VMI 165-pounder Blake Hohman was the lone bright spot for the Keydets during the match as he responded in the ensuing bout with a dominating 20-5 tech fall performance over App State’s Thomas Flitz to cut the deficit to 6-5.
It was all Appalachian State from there as the Mountaineers claimed the other eight bouts en route to the victory. In all, App State won five of their nine bouts by fall for a combined 30 points in addition to a technical fall and two major decisions.
VMI freshman 174-pounder Gage Levine put up a fight with App State’s Joe Accousti but ultimately fell by a 6-1 decision that sprung the Mountaineers to claim the remaining seven bouts.
The Keydets have 10 days off from competition before returning to action Sunday, Feb. 11 with two Southern Conference duals hosted by SIU Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois. VMI will face Campbell at noon CST before taking on host SIUE at 1:30 p.m. CST.
