BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Looking for momentum heading into next weekend’s All-Academy Championships, the VMI wrestling team fell to Sacred Heart, 27-13, in a neutral matchup before falling to host Bloomsburg by a 39-12 score Sunday in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Facing Sacred Heart in an early 10 a.m. matchup, the Keydets kept pace with the Pioneers for most of the dual, jumping ahead in the first bout (141 lbs.) and later regaining the lead, 13-12, when Max Gallahan earned a 6-3 decision over SHU’s Mark Boyle at 197 pounds with just three bouts left. Sacred Heart claimed two of the final three bouts by fall and another by decision to tack on 15 points and make the score appear more lopsided than the actual flow of the match.

Senior Michael Hulcher opened the match with a dominating 18-5 major decision over SHU’s Shaun Williams for the quick 4-0 team lead. After dropping the next two bouts, junior Blake Hohman picked up a 6-2 decision over Chris Zaccaria to trim the team deficit to 9-7 for the Pioneers.  Sophomore Chris Beck logged a hard fought 5-3 decision over Sacred Heart’s Joe Toci at 184 pounds to give VMI momentum heading into Gallahan’s match.

With the dual again starting at the 141-pound weight class, the Keydets struggled from the start in their noon matchup against the host Huskies as Bloomsburg took the first three bouts for a quick 15-0 advantage. VMI took a forfeit at 149 pounds and VMI’s Steven Midkiff was pinned at 157 pounds by Husky Kevin Laubach for 12 of the 15 Bloomsburg points.

Hohman provided a boost for the Keydets with his second victory of the day by pinning Bloomsburg’s Nate Newberry in 4:11 to cut the VMI deficit to 15-6. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Huskies were victors in the following four bouts as the Husky lead skyrocketed to 33-6 with only two bouts remaining.

The final six VMI points came by way of a Bloomsburg forfeit at 125 pounds. VMI’s Jacob Mills was then pinned in the final Keydet bout of the day as the Huskies took the 39-12 victory.

VMI returns to league action Thursday night on the road at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, which also serves as the host of this year’s All-Academy Championships slated for all day Saturday.
