SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Logan Luckett and Bethany King finished 26th and 27th, leading the VMI women's cross country team at the 2017 SoCon Cross Country Championships, contested Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C. As a team, the Keydets finished ninth in the 5K race that was won by Furman for the fifth straight year.

Luckett led the way for the Keydets at the conference championship for the second straight year, as she crossed the line 26th in 18:35. King was one spot behind in 18:41, while Anna Armfield was 55th in 19:31. Kathleen Yates (67th/20:06) and Megan Kelley (70th/20:17) rounded out VMI's top five finishers.

"I was very happy with the attitudes, work ethic and leadership from Bethany King and Logan Luckett," said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "They led the team in a positive manner and have put in a large amount of work to do so. Anna Armfield had a solid first year, running third for us all year. I am very happy with Anna's first season and think these ladies have a very bright future. We have a very young women's team and I believe they will continue to see improvements in their team performances. We possibly had our best race two weeks ago and will need to work to optimize the final race of the year in the future. I am very proud of these ladies for overcoming adversity and finishing very well."

Also in action for VMI were Christina Hill (73rd/20:40) and Isabela Melendez (79th/21:09).

The team standings saw Furman win with 23 points while Samford was second with 43 markers. ETSU was third with 97 and UTC finished fourth with 141, while UNCG and Wofford both had 168 points. UNCG finished fifth on a tiebreaker, while Western Carolina (195), Mercer (212), the Keydets (214) and The Citadel (253) rounded out the team results.
