LYNCHBURG, Va. - Kerisha Goode set a new school record in the women's 100-meter dash, while Jordan White extended his career in the hammer throw as VMI track and field took part in the Liberty Twilight Qualifier Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va.
Goode set her fourth school record in the sprints by crossing the line in 11.99 seconds, for a seventh-place finish. It broke the previous school record of 12.00 seconds, set by Shelly Mackall in 2004, and broke the final record of Mackall's that was on the books in an event still regularly contested. Goode's time was good for a seventh-place finish, and she finished fourth in the 200 as well, with a time of 24.93 seconds.
Other women's results included Julia Logan continuing her solid season with a second-place finish in the high jump (1.68 M/5'6"), which she backed up with an 11th-place finish in the long jump (5.09 M/16'8 1/2"). In addition, Elizabeth Johnson was seventh in the discus with a best effort of 39.66 meters (130'1").
On the men's side, the top story was White. The fifth-year senior extended his career in his best event, the hammer throw, by qualifying for the IC4A Championships. White won the event with a best throw of 52.53 meters (172'4").
Other action included Josh Willard finishing third in the 800 (1:54.30), one spot in front of Jahanzib Shabaz (1:54.72). Grant Sanchez finished fifth in the shot put (14.49 M/47'6 1/2") and seventh in the discus (42.32 M/138'10"), where he led three Keydets in the top-nine. Killian Carey was eighth (42.28 M/138'10") and Ross Condrey finished ninth (41.79 M/137'1").
The vault saw Andrew Arlint tie for ninth (4.14 M/13'7"), while in the javelin, Donovan Walton was fifth (51.24 M/168'1") and Carey finished sixth (50.05/164'2").
Finally, Micah Ellington led several Keydets in the men's 1,500 with an 11th-place finish in 3:57.51. Ellington finished 11th in a race won by VMI alumnus Donnie Cowart that also saw former Keydet Avery Martin place fourth.
VMI track and field returns to action Thursday, when the VMI men open the IC4A Championships and the Keydet women begin the SoCon Championships.
