The H.M. "Son" Read '16 Memorial Track is VMI's Track and Field's outdoor facility. In 1986, the outdoor track was converted to from six to eight lanes, and from 440 yards to 400 meters. Completion of the project along with renovations and subsequent resurfacings, including the 2007 resurfacing, gave VMI one of the best ovals in the Southeast and 10,000 seat outdoor facility for prime venue hosting.
VMI played host to the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1991, 1994, 1997 and 2001, and hosted its first Big South Championship in 2005. The BSC Championships again came to Lexington in 2011, when Felix Kitur (Most Outstanding Men's Track Performer) and Mary Grace Lemon (Women's Freshman of the Year) garnered conference honors.
Read Memorial Track also hosted the 2007 and 2010 Military Championships.
