Samuel Rice enters his first season as VMI’s Director of Athletics Equipment Services following his hire in July of 2019.
He comes to the Institute by way of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he served as an assistant equipment manager and interim head equipment manager. In this role he was responsible for ordering equipment and supplies and the reconditioning of equipment for the football team while maintaining inventory of all apparel for the football, basketball and softball teams. He also ran football practice drills, ball spotting and operated the play clock in addition to daily laundry duties.
Prior to his role at Weber State, Rice served as the head equipment manager for the Saginaw Spirit hockey team, a major junior hockey team in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League. His many responsibilities included ordering and maintaining all hockey equipment, locker room supplies and apparel while sharpening skates and repairing equipment. He oversaw the inventory of equipment and the daily locker room setup and cleanup for practices and games.
His career began as an equipment intern for the football team at the University of Utah where he assisted with the inventory, organization and maintenance of all team equipment and apparel. He coordinated Under Armour apparel for players and staff, supervised student managers and volunteers and helped pack bags and game trunks for all home and road games.
In all roles he learned to execute SportSoft and JumpForward software for equipment inventory and operate STAHLS heat press machines.
Rice graduated from the University of Utah in 2012 with a bachelor of science in mass communication.
