Hubbard Announces 2019 Recruiting Class

LEXINGTON, Va. – New VMI head men’s soccer coach Charlie Hubbard announced his 2019 recruiting class Wednesday, featuring 11 newcomers to the program this fall. Of the incoming freshmen, five are from Virginia, two from South Carolina and one each from Georgia, New York, Colorado and Nigeria.

Below are some highlights of each recruit, with a quote from Coach Hubbard.

Gabe Calhoun

HS: Saint Mary’s

Club: Colorado Rush

Position: GK

Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado

Hubbard Quote: He is a tall and athletic goalkeeper with a very high ceiling. We are excited to see him develop while he is at VMI.

A 4-year High School Varsity Starter and 2-year Team Captain. Colorado High School Coaches Association 3A All State 1st Team 2017, played in 2017 All State Game. Colorado High School Activities Association 3A All State 2nd Team 2017. Colorado High School Coaches Association 3A All State 2nd Team 2016 and 2016 All State Game Roster. 3-time All-Conference (3A Tri-Peaks) 2015, 2016, 2017.

 

Joshua Lam

HS: Clover Hill

Club: Fredericksburg FC

Position: OB

Hometown: Midlothian, VA

Hubbard Quote: A solid defender who can play on either side of the field. His versatility and consistency will help him succeed during his time at VMI.

US Club Soccer Regional Champion 2016, US Club Soccer National Champion 2016, Jeff Cup Champion 2019, Bethesda Showcase Champion 2017, Loudoun Showcase Champion 2016 and 2019.

 

Nathan Lam

HS: Clover Hill

Club: Fredericksburg FC

Position: CDM

Hometown: Midlothian, VA

Hubbard Quote: Nate is a consistent midfielder who can break up the opponent’s play, start attacks from deep, or drive forward on the ball.

Nadim Lissa

Club: Virginia Rush

Position: CAM

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Hubbard Quote: He is a technical midfielder who can play a few different positions. His vision on the ball has stood out each time I have seen him play.

Varsity captain, VHSL 6A all district, Offensive MVP Varsity, top assister for Club team, Rush Select.

 

Wes Lorrens

HS: IMG Academy

Club: IMG Academy DA

Position: CB

Hometown: Rome, GA

Hubbard Quote: Wes is a tough center back who is just as good stopping the opponent as he is starting attacks. He will add to our current, talented defensive line we already have.

Captained IMG U17 National Elite to NPL National Championships. Played on Georgia ODP team 2015-2016 until moving to IMG. IMG U19 DA

 

Michael Ogenyi

HS: Landstown

Club: Virginia Rush

Position: FW

Hometown: Makurdi, Nigeria

Hubbard Quote: He is a talented attacker who has an eye for creating chances and scoring goals. He has consistently done this for his high school and club team.

Anderson Velazquez

Hubbard Quote: Anderson is a threat in the attack no matter what position he plays. He will help make our team more dangerous on offense.
