SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI’s Davone Hernandez and Logan Luckett have been named Southern Conference men’s and women’s runners of the week, respectively, for competition that took place Sept. 5 - 11.
Hernandez, a sophomore, came in third overall to lead the Keydets to a second-place finish at the JMU Invite in New Market, Virginia, on Saturday with a time of 26:22 in the 8k run.
Luckett, a junior, lead VMI to a third-place finish at the JMU Invite on Saturday. The Elk Rapids, Michigan, native finished 10th overall with a time of 20:34 in the 5,200-meter run.
"Logan has been a solid leader for our team," said VMI cross country coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "Luckett and Anna Armfield ran together for the entire New Market race. They helped pace their teammates at the start of the race. I was happy with our leaders and the entire team for working hard to prepare for and execute the plans for the meet. The team atmosphere and attitudes have been excellent and I am looking forward to carrying that environment forward into the SoCon Championships. We are looking forward to getting ready for the George Mason Invite on September 29th."
"Davone has started the season well. He is having fun in practice and at the meets, which will be very helpful in his long-term development as well as short-term performance. I am looking forward to watching the season progress as we have a good depth of talent this year. We are setting some goals for the upcoming meet at George Mason with team goals to continue to pull our 5th and 7th runners closer to our top athletes."
The Keydets are back in action in two weeks at the Mason Invite in Leesburg, Virginia.
