CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - An epic comeback fell just one hit short as the #14 Virginia Cavaliers edged the VMI Keydets, 10-9, in baseball action Tuesday at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.

The Keydets (5-3) fell behind 10-1 after three innings, but then mounted an epic comeback by scoring eight unanswered runs. A three-run double by Jake Huggins began the rally in the fourth, and Nate Eaton's fourth home run of the year highlighted a two-run fifth that got the Keydets back in the game at 10-6.

VMI closer Matt Eagle then entered the game in the sixth and went on to pitch three scoreless innings, allowing the rally to continue with a three-spot in the seventh.

UVA (5-3) closer Bennett Sousa pitched a shutout eighth with a one-run lead, but hit Peyton Maddox to start the ninth. Will Malbon bunted him to second, putting the Keydets in position to tie the game with a single, but Sousa retired Collin Fleischer and Matt Dunlevy to close out the game.

Brandon Barbery (1-1) took the loss for the Keydets, as he was charged with eight runs in two innings of work in a game that he started. Barbery walked two and struck out one. Andrew Abbott got no-decision after being charged with four runs in four innings, and Devin Ortiz (1-0) retired one batter in the fifth to post the win. Sousa picked up his second save.

Four Keydets had two hits apiece as the team scored nine runs, marking the fifth straight game that had seen VMI score eight runs or more. Cayman Richardson had three hits to lead the Cavaliers.

VMI baseball will return to action Friday, when the Keydets play host to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at Gray-Minor Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
