FAIRFAX, Va. – Trailing only 10-6 after three bouts, the VMI wrestling team could not keep pace with host George Mason as the Patriots registered a 40-9 win over the Keydets Sunday afternoon in Fairfax, Virginia.
Down 10-0 after consecutive technical falls to open the match, VMI 141-pounder Michael Hulcher slowed the Patriot momentum with a pin over GMU’s Talha Farooq in 2:16 to provide the Keydets with six team points. From there it was all George Mason as VMI could only claim one more bout in the loss, a high-scoring 15-13 decision win by junior Blake Hohman at 165 pounds.
Before Hohman’s win, the Keydets surrendered a technical fall and major decision to fall into a large deficit at the midpoint of the match. The Patriots would go on to claim three of the four final bouts by fall to balloon the advantage to a 40-9 margin by the end.
VMI will compete at the SoCon Championships slated for Saturday, March 3 hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
