EMMITSBURG, Md. - An 84th-minute goal by Taylor Callahan broke a scoreless tie and sent the VMI Keydets past the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action in Emmitsburg, Md.

After the teams had battled to a scoreless tie through the first 83-plus minute, a shot by Blake Cashin was saved by Mount (3-5) keeper Maggie Barron. The rebound bounced free, however, and Callahan lofted a shot into the resulting open net for the eventual game-winner.

"I was really proud of our effort today," said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. "We created chances and really played with full effort for the entire 90 minutes. The Mount are a quality opponent, so in many ways, this was our best match of the season."

The match was rather evenly played, as although the Mount outshot the Keydets 8-2, the teams combined for just three first half tries on goal. Ceci Keppeler made two saves and it remained 0-0 at halftime.

The squads then combined for just three shots on goal early in the second half as well, before the Cashin-Callahan sequence that led to the game-winning goal.

For the match, the Mount outshot VMI 16-8 and held a 4-3 edge in corners. Keppeler was credited with four saves, as was Barron.

VMI women's soccer will return to action Friday, when the Keydets play host to Radford at 4 p.m.
