Richard Lavorato enters his second season as an assistant coach for the VMI wrestling program.

Lavorato comes to VMI from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, New Jersey where he served as an assistant coach for two years. His primary responsibilities involved running practices, which helped the program to turn out seven state place winners and one state champion. He also attended weekend tournaments, fundraising and promoting the school, in addition to holding offseason workouts and camps.

A native of West Caldwell, New Jersey, Lavorato competed at the Division I level as a member of the George Mason University wrestling team from 2011-13. As a senior, he placed fourth at the CAA Championships in 2013. During his time at GMU, he also excelled in academics as he received the CAA Commissioner's Award for three straight years from 2011-13.

On top of competing for the team, Lavorato served as an office intern for the GMU wrestling program, helping to plan, develop and promote team events and camps while gaining insight on how to run an effective Division I program.

Lavorato served as a camp counselor for the J Robinson Intensive Camp: Beat the Streets NY in August 2012 in Loch Sheldrake, New York, where he developed and taught wrestling technique sessions and supervised camper progress. That summer he also served as an assistant coach for the NJAC Wrestling Club in Fairfield, New Jersey, where he ran practices and attended weekend tournaments.

A distinguished wrestler in high school, Lavorato owned a 107-39 career record at James Caldwell High where he was a three-time district champion, one-time runner up, and three-time regional placewinner (top four finish).

Lavorato graduated from George Mason in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in health, fitness and recreational resources with a concentration in sports management and minor in conflict analysis and resolution. He went on to earn a master's degree in 2014 in sport and recreation studies from George Mason.
