Sean Bernstein
Position: Assistant Track and Field Coach - Sprints, Hurdles

2016-17 was Sean Bernstein's first year at the Institute, following his hiring on August 12, 2016 to work primarily with the sprint and hurdle groups. He immediately had a huge impact, as the top four women's 60-meter times in school history all occurred during his first season as a Keydet assistant coach. Kerisha Goode set a new school record in the event, and another of those sprinters, Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe, finished second in the SoCon in both the 60 hurdles indoors and the 100 hurdles outdoors.

On the men's side, Bernstein helped Greg Henderson to a season that included an eighth-place finish at the IC4A Championships in the 60-meters.

Bernstein came to VMI from San Jose State, where he had served as a volunteer assistant coach since August of 2014. There, he worked primarily with the sprints, hurdles and relays, including designing and implementing practice plans. While on the west coast, he also served as a director of the Skyhawks Sports Academy, where he was part of camp administration and athlete training, as well as implementation of camp curriculum.

Bernstein's athletic career is one of great note, as he graduated from SUNY Oneonta and while there, was a seven-time All-American and a two-time individual NCAA Champion in the 200-meter dash. He set a meet record (20.80) in that event in 2012, and won the title again the following year, when he also was part of the winning 4X100-meter relay squad. That helped him earn Division III Athlete of the Year honors for outdoor track and field, the same year that VMI distance coach Dr. Drew Ludtke was the co-Division III Coach of the Year in indoor track and field.

Bernstein was also a three-time Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year at the Division III level, a two-time ECAC champion and a 12-time SUNYAC champion. From the USATF, he holds not only his level 1 certification, but meet management and strength and conditioning certifications as well. He has reached level two certification in the jumps and also holds his sprint, hurdle and relay specialist certification as well. After graduating from SUNY Oneonta, he earned his Masters degree from San Jose State.
