LEXINGTON, Va. -- After a road-heavy schedule in 2013, the latest edition of the schedule for the Virginia Military Institute men’s soccer team will be home friendly as 10 games in Lexington adorn the 2014 slate, including the return of the Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament.
The Keydets host the Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament for the first time since 2012 and welcome Robert Morris University, University of South Carolina Upstate and Liberty University to Patchin Field. On Sept. 12, Liberty and Robert Morris kick off the Tournament at 1 p.m., followed by VMI against USC Upstate at 4 p.m. Action continues on Sept. 14 as Liberty and USC Upstate square off at 12:30 p.m., followed by the Keydets versus Robert Morris at 3:30 p.m.
VMI unofficially begins the 2014 season with a pair of road exhibitions. On August 22, VMI heads next door to Washington & Lee University, followed by a trip to Bristol, Tennessee for a scrimmage at King College on Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. A game time for the Washington & Lee scrimmage has not been announced.
The season opens with a pair of home games against former Big South Conference foes, Longwood University and Liberty. VMI hosts the Lancers on Aug. 30 at 4 p.m., followed by a Sept. 2 meeting with Liberty at 4 p.m.
VMI’s first road game of the year will be at another league opponent, UNC Asheville. Action is slated for 7 p.m.
After the Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament, the Keydets return home to host Howard University on Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. The Keydets hit the road to take on Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Wake Forest University on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
For the first time since 2002, the Keydets will play a Southern Conference game as the Institute transitions back to the SoCon from the Big South Conference. VMI’s first game in its new league will be against Mercer University on Sept. 27 at 11:30 a.m.
On Sept. 30, the Keydets make their annual trip to Blacksburg, Virginia for a 7 p.m. matchup with Virginia Tech to round out the month of September.
Eight of the remaining nine conference games on the schedule will be played in October, beginning with Furman University. Game time for the Oct. 4 league clash is set to begin at Patchin Field at 2 p.m. The Keydets’ first road game in the Southern Conference will be on Oct. 7 at East Tennessee State University at 7 p.m. The only back-to-back conference games for VMI this season sends the Keydets to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Oct. 11 for a meeting with Wofford College at a time to be announced at a later date.
VMI returns to the friendly confines of Patchin Field to take on UNC Greensboro on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m., followed by a road game at Furman on Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. The Keydets welcome ETSU on Oct. 21 for a 4 p.m. start before heading to Macon, Georgia for an Oct. 25 game at Mercer. The start time for the second game at Mercer will be announced at a later date.
The Keydets will host Wofford on Oct. 28 for a 4 p.m. tilt that will serve as senior day for the Class of 2015. The regular season rounds out on Nov. 1 as VMI heads to North Carolina for a clash with UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.Southern Conference Championship action begins on Nov. 8 for the quarterfinals. The higher seed will host the opening game. SoCon tournament actions continues on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 for the semifinals and championship game. The semifinals and finals will be contested in Cary, N.C.
