BOONE, N.C. – Aron Long claimed victory in the 200-meters and did so in an IC4A qualifying time of 22.20 seconds, leading the VMI Keydet men's track and field team Saturday at the Appalachian State Pre-Conference Meet, held in Boone, N.C. The meet was VMI's final competition before the Big South Indoor Championships.
Long also factored in another strong effort for the Keydets as he finished fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.64 seconds), just ahead of teammate Pete Reed (6.56). The Keydets also swept the podium in the 400-meters, with Julian Jackson (51.24), Brandon Hartman (51.51) and Yol Ho Sung (51.64) finishing in that order.
VMI also had quality results in the shot put, placing three throwers in the top five of the Division I section. Joel Hoisington led the way, finishing second with a best toss of 14.71 M/48’3 ¼”. Blake Condrey posted a personal best to finish third, stretching the tape to 14.50 M/47’7” and Grant Sanchez was fifth (14.23 M/46’8 ¼”). Condrey’s PR was more than a half-meter better than his past top effort, set at January’s YSU Invite.
“Our goal in coming to this meet was to accomplish positive things and continue to get ready for the Big South meet,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “We had some good results, and I am confident we will come out ready to go on Friday.”
VMI track and field returns to action at the Big South Indoor Championships, which begin Friday in Blacksburg, Va.
