ROCKVILLE, Md. - VMI catcher Red Dowdell has been named a Cal Ripken League all-star, according to information released by the league Friday.
Dowdell, who will enter his sophomore season in 2014, got off to a poor start for the Vienna River Dogs, but has earned his all-star berth by going on a tear over the past two weeks. After concluding his June 29 game batting just .190, he has hit safely in eight of his last nine contests, with four multi-hit games among those efforts. That has boosted his average to .270 in 25 games.
The Cal Ripken League's All-Star Game will take place July 17 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. The game begins at 7:30 p.m., but pre-game events and festivities will start at 2:45 p.m.
