LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI cross country programs released their 2013 schedule Tuesday, a six-meet slate highlighted by hosting the Big South Championship for the first time since 2005.
"This is a good schedule for our cross country programs," said VMI's Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Darrin Webb. "We look forward to hosting the conference championship at the Buena Vista Golf Course in November."
The Keydets open their slate by traveling to Boone, N.C. to take part in Appalachian State's Covered Bridge Open August 30. It will be the third time in the last four years VMI has competed at the Mountaineer home course, and the first time since the 2005 season that the Keydets do not open at home. That year, VMI also went to the Mountaineers' season opening event.
VMI plays host to the VMI Invitational on Sept. 21, a meet that will be held at the Vista Links Golf Course in Buena Vista, on the same location as the Big South Championships will be held some seven weeks later. According to records available, this will be VMI's first home cross country meet not held at the Virginia Horse Center since the 2001 season.
The Keydets then travel to McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C. for the Sept. 28 Charlotte Invitational. It will be the third time in four years the Keydets have competed on this course, the same one that saw Felix Kitur set what is believed to be an 8K school record in 2010.
VMI then returns to Appalachian State for the Blue Ridge Open on Oct. 18, before hosting the conference championships in Buena Vista Nov. 2 and traveling to Charlottesville's Panorama Farms for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 18. More information about the 2013 Big South Championships will be made available as the meet draws closer.
