VMI baseball returns to action after an 11-day layoff Friday, opening a three-game Big South series against the Winthrop Eagles at Gray-Minor Stadium. The series opener will begin at 6 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday’s games to start at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.

How to Follow

Fans can follow along with the action in a number of ways. Both the Saturday and Sunday games can be viewed on the Big South Network for a small fee, while accompanying audio streams will also be available on VMIKeydets.com. Both of those games can also be heard on local radio station AM 1450, WREL, while all three contests can be followed via live stats. As always, all needed links are to the left of this article.

Probable Starting Pitchers

Friday: VMI LHP Campbell Henkel (1-6, 5.31) vs. WU RHP Matt Pierpont (4-4, 3.36)
Saturday: VMI RHP Reed Garrett (2-7, 6.58) vs. WU LHP Sam Kmiec (3-6, 3.70)
Sunday: VMI LHP Connor Bach (2-4, 2.86) vs. WU TBA

Quick Hitters

The Keydets are looking to preserve their hopes of making the Big South Championship tournament, and will be watching the teams directly above them in the standings - Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern. The Keydets must pass both in order to make the tournament, and must make up an extra game on CSU as the Bucs own the tiebreaker (2-1 head to head advantage).

Rob Dickinson is six games away from VMI’s first .400 season since 1986 - the Big South has had at least one player hit .400 every year since the 2005 season, but Dickinson appears to be the league’s only hope this year. It, in fact, was the Winthrop series last season (April 6-7) that started Dickinson’s current run - Since that time, he is hitting 114 for 284, a .408 clip that includes just under half of his career hits (237).
