LEXINGTON, Va. -- Heading into his fourth season at the helm of the Virginia Military Institute men’s soccer team, head coach Richie Rose has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming season. The Keydets will fight through a road-heavy schedule, with just five home games and 13 games away from Patchin Field.
The Keydets open the fall schedule with a pair of exhibition games, both of which will be in Lexington. On Aug. 16, VMI hosts Bluefield College at 2 p.m., followed by a tuneup with Appalachian State on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
VMI’s first regular season home game will be on Sept. 6 when New Jersey Institute of Technology visits Lexington for a 5 p.m. game. The Keydets will not play at home until the end of the month when they host defending Big South Conference champion and NCAA tournament qualifier Winthrop on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.
The Keydets will host back-to-back Big South Conference games in October, first on the 16th against Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m., followed by UNC Asheville on the 26th at 2 p.m. Senior Day for the Keydets will be on Nov. 9 when VMI invites conference opponent High Point to town at 1 p.m.
Rose and the Keydets open the 2013 season on Aug. 30 when they head to West Point, N.Y. to face Army. A time for that game has not yet been determined. Getting an early jump on league play, VMI will head to Buies Creek, N.C. on Sept. 3 for a tilt with Campbell at 7 p.m.
After the first home game against NJIT, the Keydets will have a run of five straight road games, kicking off with a local battle against James Madison University on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. That weekend, VMI heads to the nation’s capital for a clash with George Washington University on Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.
On Sept. 17, the Keydets head to West Virginia for a game with Marshall at 6 p.m. The Keydets’ last two road games of the swing will be in Virginia, first at Old Dominion on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., followed by a Big South matchup at Liberty on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
The Keydets open the month of October with another road swing, kicking off with Presbyterian College on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. VMI heads back to South Carolina on Oct. 11 for a match with the league’s runner-up last season, Coastal Carolina, at 4 p.m. VMI takes a break from Big South action with a quick trip to Blacksburg, Va. for a tilt with Virginia Tech on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
Following the only back-to-back home games of 2013, Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville, VMI hits the road for another three game swing, heading down the road to Radford on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The Keydets make another trip north for a non-league game on Nov. 2 against Howard at 3 p.m., followed by the road finale at Longwood on Nov. 6 with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
This year’s Big South Conference Championship will run from Nov. 12 through Nov. 17, with the quarterfinals on Nov. 12 at the higher seed. The semifinals and championship game, will be on Nov. 15 and Nov. 17, respectively, will be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.
The Keydets will face a challenging schedule this year, with opponents combining to go 146-164-39 in 2012, including 60-72-17 by the non-conference opponents adorning this season’s slate. The Keydets will faceoff against three NCAA tournament teams, Old Dominion, Winthrop and Coastal Carolina, with the latter two advancing at least one round in the brackets.
