BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Hector Cedano pitched eight innings and allowed just one run, while Brent Graham scored four of the Campbell Camels’ eight runs as the VMI Keydets fell to CU, 8-1, in Big South baseball action Sunday in Buies Creek, N.C. The contest was the series finale between the clubs.
After Cedano struck out the side in the first inning, Campbell (35-8, 14-4 Big South) took advantage of three Keydet (18-25, 5-10 BSC) errors to score five runs over the first two innings, and CU never trailed. The home team added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, while Cedano allowed just four singles and walked only one until the ninth, when he issued free passes to the first two hitters, one of whom scored to account for the final margin, 8-1.
A day after being removed due to injury, Rob Dickinson went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and was one of four Keydet hitters with a lone single on the day. Sunday marked the 25th straight game in which Dickinson had reached base, and gave him a 14-game hitting streak as well. Eric Mayers also had a single in the game in his first start of the season.
On the mound, Reed Garrett (2-6) took the loss as he was charged with six runs, three earned, in six-plus innings. Cedano moved to 8-2 by allowing one run over eight innings, walking three and striking out nine.
Campbell took the early lead with three runs in the first. With one out, Graham singled and Michael Felton was hit by a pitch. David Olson and Elijah Trail followed with back to back singles, scoring the initial runners to make it 2-0, Camels. On the next play, Michael DeLucia hit a ground ball to third close to the bag. Ray Lopez tried to tag the runner scampering back to third, but to no avail. He then threw to first but threw wildly, and the ball bounced out of play to allow a run to score, making it 3-0.
The margin grew to 5-0 in the second, when Ben McQuown singled and Garrett could not come up with a sacrifice bunt attempt by Graham. Felton then grounded to second, but the ball was misplayed by second baseman Drew Bryan for an error, allowing a run to score. Olson then drove in the second run of the inning with a RBI groundout, marking a 5-0 advantage for the home team.
The Keydets threatened in the fifth, when Mayers led off with a single for his first hit of the year. Lopez moved him up with a ground ball, but Nick Dwyer then bounced a grounder in the shortstop hole. Graham ranged to his right, fielded the ball, and while moving, threw to third to retire Mayers for the second out. Dwyer stole second, but Thomas Stallings struck out to end the inning.
Campbell added on in the seventh when Graham led off with a single and eventually scored on Trail’s sacrifice fly. The Camels would then wrap up the scoring in the eighth. A two-out, RBI triple by Graham and a RBI single by Felton accounted for CU’s seventh and eighth runs, while the Keydets notched their run in the ninth on a double play ball off the bat of Mayers.
VMI baseball will return to action Tuesday, when the Keydets play host to Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
