LYNCHBURG, Va. – Jenna Moye broke her own school record in the 800-meters, leading the VMI women’s track and field team on the final day of the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, contested Saturday at Liberty University’s Matthes-Hopkins Track in Lynchburg, Va.
Moye’s time of 2:15.41 was .44 better than her previous VMI record, set last season, and was good enough for a fifth-place finish. The senior was one of two Keydets to finish in the top eight in the 800, as freshman Kelsey Newcomb crossed the line in seventh place, timing in at 2:19.78.
One of Moye and Newcomb’s cross country teammates, Leah Schubel, also had a strong day Saturday, finishing fourth in the 5,000-meters with an 18:37.24 time. Renee Reives was also in action, placing in the top five in two events. The sophomore was fourth in the discus (41.18 M/135’1”) and fifth in the shot put (13.24 M/43’5 ¼”). She was joined in the discus by Mary Grace Lemon, who finished sixth with a best effort of 39.51 M/129’7”.
Kate Collins posted a third-place finish in the pole vault, tying for the best clearance of the day but finishing third on misses. Collins sailed over the bar at 3.57 meters/11’8 ½”.
Finally, Thireyona Legg was seventh in the 400-meters, timing in at 59.43.
VMI track and field returns to action next Saturday, April 13, taking part in the George Mason Invite in Fairfax, Va.
