The Keydets will be looking for the program’s first MAAC win, but this weekend is the time to do it as VMI is undefeated at home all-time (2-0) at Clark King Pool. The Keydets will put that record to the test first thing Saturday morning as they take on back-to-back league champion Iona, which currently sits atop the MAAC standings at 13-8.
VMI (9-9) sports one of the top offenses in the MAAC, averaging 9.47 goals per game through 17 games this season. That offensive effort is paced by sophomore captain Celine Lazzaro, who is currently third in the conference (as of Mar. 20) in goals per game, scoring 52 markers in the team’s 17 games (3.06). Lazzaro needs just 12 goals to surpass teammate Mackenzie Perkins’ record single-season mark of 64 goals (2012).
Joining Lazzaro in the offensive ranks is Caitlyn Jackson, who was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 12. Jackson has potted 33 goals so far this season, averaging 1.94 per game, ranking her 10th in the conference.
In goal is another rookie standout in Molly Watkins, who like Jackson, has earned a weekly award from the MAAC, being tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on March 12. Watkins has racked up 145 saves in 2013, just 41 shy of Amanda Berrios’ single-season record of 186 (2012). Watkins checks in at the number three spot in the MAAC stats rankings, averaging 8.53 saves per game. She is second in total saves behind Wagner’s Laura Karbach (221).
