WHITTIER, Calif. -- Playing its sixth game of a nine-game road run through California, the Virginia Military Institute women’s water polo team fell to Whittier College 12-6 late Wednesday night at the Poets’ Slade Aquatic Center.

It was a close game early, with Whittier taking a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and a 7-4 lead at the halftime break, but the Keydets (8-8) got in foul trouble in the second half. The Poets out-scored VMI 5-2 in the third and fourth quarters for the win.

The Keydets got another hat trick from the team’s leading scorer, Celine Lazzaro, but the sophomore was excluded in the third quarter after racking up three fouls. Caitlyn Jackson, VMI’s second leading goal-getter notched two tallies, but met a similar fate and was also excluded in the third.

Freshman Emily Cait Farsakian accounted for VMI’s sixth goal, striking in the second half. The Keydets were held off the board in the final eight minute quarter.

In goal, freshman Molly Watkins continued to play strong, stopping 11 Poet shots while playing in all 32 minutes of the game.

The Keydets round out the road series on Friday, playing a pair of games at the Cal Baptist Tournament. VMI opens the Tournament with Azusa Pacific at 10:20 a.m. (PST), followed by a final game on the west coast against Macalester at 2:20 p.m. (PST). Both games will be held at Lancer Aquatics Center in Riverside, Calif.
