CHARLOTTE, N.C. - VMI senior forward Stan Okoye has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for games played Feb. 4-10, according to information released by the conference Monday afternoon. Okoye shared the honor with Radford's Javonte Green.
Okoye averaged 30.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games last week. He scored a team-high 27 points on 12-of-20 from the field in a victory at Longwood, which included 3-of-6 from long range. Okoye followed that game with 34 points and 16 rebounds against UNC Asheville on Friday night for his eighth double-double of the year. For the week, Okoye was 25-of-47 from the field ( = 53.2) and 7-of-17 from three-point range ( =41.2).
Okoye's Player of the Week honor is his fourth of the season, and he becomes the first Big South player to grab four such laurels in a campaign since the 2009-10 year, when both Joseph Harris (Coastal Carolina) and Art Parakhouski (Radford) accomplished the feat.
While the VMI senior does share this week's honor, it should be noted that no player has ever received five Big South Player of the Week honors, shared or outright, in one season. Including the co-POTW award, Okoye shares the record of four with Doug Day (Radford, 1990-91), Tony Dunkin (Coastal Carolina, 1990-91), Peter Aluma (Liberty, 1995-96), Harris and Parakhouski.
VMI basketball will return to action Wednesday night, playing host to Radford at Cameron Hall. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
