LEXINGTON, Va. - Virginia Military Institute will travel to Poughkeepsie, New York on Saturday, February 23 to face Marist in the 2013 Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters ESPN college basketball event taking place that weekend. Tipoff for the game will be announced at a later time by Marist.
Marist is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and currently has a 5-18 mark with a 2-10 conference record. The Red Foxes next travel to Iona Thursday night.
The Keydets currently have a 10-10 record with a 5-3 mark in the Big South Conference North Division. VMI faces Longwood Wednesday night in Farmville, Virginia.
VMI and Marist have never met in basketball, yet the Keydets have traveled to Poughkeepsie before to compete in hoops on the Marist campus. In December, 1992 the Keydets participated in the Pepsi Marist Classic hosted by Marist and drew Central Connecticut State in the first round. VMI fell in overtime to CCSU, but rebounded the next night to knock off Lafayette in the consolation game. The Keydets and Red Foxes never played each other in the '92-'93 season event.
VMI and Marist do share a common athletic bond in another sport fielded by both schools as they both compete in the MAAC in men's lacrosse and women's water polo.
The Keydets will be competing in their third consecutive BracketBusters and carry a 1-1 mark in the event. Two years ago, VMI fell at Morgan State of the MEAC in Baltimore in their BracketBusters debut. Last year, the Keydets hosted William and Mary of the CAA and knocked off their longtime state rival, 73-65, at Cameron Hall.
VMI has not faced a current member of the MAAC since December 29, 2005 when the Keydets fell to Loyola (Md.) at Cameron Hall.
All of the Big South's men's basketball programs are participating in BracketBusters the same year for the second consecutive season, and the Conference is tied for the most members competing of the 15 Leagues involved, as the 12 Big South members are among the overall field of 122 teams. The Big South Conference will play three members each from the Southern Conference (SoCon), Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC),in the pairings announced Tuesday evening by ESPN. In addition, the Big South will meet two programs from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and one from the Southland Conference (SLC).
In games against the MAAC this season, the Big South teams hold a 0-2 record with Canisius topping Longwood and Iona defeating Liberty in December matchups.
