VMI basketball continues its homestand Saturday afternoon, as the Keydets play host to the Winthrop Eagles at Cameron Hall. Game time is set for 1 p.m., and the contest can be heard in the Lexington area on 96.7 3WZ, as well as on WREL.com and VMIKeydets.com. The game can be seen online on the Big South Network Presented by State Farm, and live stats are available via VMIKeydets.com.
Wednesday night's game saw VMI use a 9-0 run early in the second half to break the game open and go on to a 82-69 win over Liberty at Cameron Hall. The Keydets moved to 2-0 in the conference for the first time since 2008-09 behind Stan Okoye's fourth double-double of the year, D.J. Covington's 18 points and four blocks and Rodney Glasgow's 13-point, seven-rebound and seven-assist night. VMI had a season-low seven turnovers in the win, and made 12 three-pointers against the conference's top three-point percentage defense.
Last Meeting with Winthrop (2/4/2012):
Keith Gabriel had 32 points, including nine of VMI's final 10, and the VMI Keydets defeated the Winthrop Eagles, 86-79, in Big South action held on VMI Basketball Alumni Day Feb. 4, 2012 at Lexington's Cameron Hall.
With the teams locked in a back and forth battle, Winthrop's Andre Jones hit a three-pointer to put the Eagles (10-15, 7-7 Big South) up by one with 4:09 remaining, but Stan Okoye fired back with a triple of his own, giving the Keydets (12-11, 7-6) a two-point margin. Gabriel then hit a triple with 2:40 left, stretching the lead out to five, and went on to score the next six Keydet points to help send the 3,665 fans home with a VMI win.
A VMI win against Winthrop would:
Be VMI's fourth straight win and move the Keydets over .500 for the first time this season.
Move VMI to 3-0 in Big South play for the second time since joining the conference (2008-09, when the Keydets started 6-0).
Be the Keydets' third straight win over the Eagles.
