VMI lacrosse will play host to Jacksonville University, Feb. 27, for the Keydets’ home opener and the first meeting between the programs. Live stats will be available for the contest at the link below, with a set start time of 1 p.m. In addition, game notes have been provided by the VMI media relations staff.
The Keydets come off an impressive showing against Army, as VMI nearly pulled the upset against the Black Knights last Saturday. Trailing 10-5 with 13:15 to play, the Keydets mounted a comeback over the next 7:24. Jacob Weimer scored just 45 seconds into the run, and Drew Leonard followed with a goal to cut the margin to three.
Bobby Davis then notched a pair of goals, the last tally a man-up marker, to cut the deficit to 10-9 with 5:51 left. Unfortunately for VMI, the Keydets could get no closer, and the Black Knights added a late insurance goal to account for the final margin.
VMI was paced by Stephen Robarge, who went 16 for 19 at the face-off X to jump start the Keydet offensive attack. The sophomore is now 31 for 40 in face-off attempts on the young season, for an impressive percentage of 77.5. For his efforts, Robarge was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday evening.
Jacksonville pulled off an upset this past Saturday, defeating #18 Denver 13-12 in a thrilling triple overtime game for the first win in Dolphins lacrosse history. Freshman attack Ryan Serville had six points, including three goals, and now has 10 goals and five assists on the young season.
Thus far in their inaugural season, the Dolphins have averaged 40 shots attempts a game. In net, keeper Brad Hester has an 11.56 GAA.
Following today’s game, the Keydets return to action Tuesday, as they travel to Presbyterian to take on the Blue Hose. Game time in Clinton, S.C. is set for 1 p.m.
