H.M. "Son" Read '16 Memorial Track
The H.M. "Son" Read '16 Memorial Track, resurfaced in 2005, is the home of VMI outdoor track and field. The facility has hosted such VMI greats as Donnie Cowart and Felix Kitur, and has hosted four SoCon Championships (1991, 1994, 1997 and 2001) along with the 2010 Big South Championships.
In 1986, the outdoor track was converted to from 6 to 8 lanes, and from 440 yards to 400 meters.
The Shenandoah Valley area offers some of the most beautiful yet challenging terrain imaginable for training. During the fall, members of the VMI Cross Country team utilize the rugged hills and wooded paths in the surrounding area to prepare for the upcoming season.
VMI distance runners enjoy use of the new World-Class indoor Training Center as well as some of the best running trails in the country. From Post, there is easy access to many mountain roads and trails that can take a runner to beautiful settings and views. Runners can run through the Washington and Lee Campus as well as VMI and downtown Lexington.
The highlight for distance athletes are the amount of off road/soft surfaces, VMI runners have easy access to the Woods Creek Trail System/Jordans Point (3 miles), Kendal and Boxerwood preserves (many short loops), Washington and Lee Trails (6 miles of forests/river), the Chessie Trail System (8 miles of tow path), and Brushy Hills (13 miles of single track). Additionally, training around North Post Drill fields provides for a perfect 800 meters on grass for intervals.
Within a short drive, there is access to the Blue Ridge Parkway (10 miles), the Appalachian Trial (12 miles), and Douthat State Park (30 miles).
