George Laraia begins his first year as an academic center is assistant athletic academic advisor at VMI.
Laraia earned his bachelor of science degree in human development and learning with a concentration in sports studies from St. Bonaventure University (N.Y.) in May 2019.
While at St. Bonaventure, Laraia was a member of the Division I cross country and track & field teams all four years. He finished his outdoor track career ranking 10th in SBU history in the 1500 (4:26.29) and fifth in the 5000 (16:22.47), the latter coming in his final event at the Atlantic 10 Championships. He was also a member of the Physical Activities Club and the Competitive Edge Programs at St. Bonaventure.
He completed an internship with the Olean, New York YMCA in the fall of 2018. He finished 150 hours of onsite work, assisting in after school activities programs. Laraia supervised student safety, resolved issues and developed CATCH training activities for students.
Laraia also worked as a lifeguard in Middletown, N.Y. for three summers.
