Casey McDonald enters his second season as an assistant coach for the VMI lacrosse program overseeing the goalies and faceoff specialists.

McDonald was instrumental in coaching the Keydets to four victories in 2019, the most in seven years for the program, VMI tallied wins over Manhattan, NJIT, Wagner and Hampton. VMI goalie Benjamin Stump ranked fifth in the Southern Conference in saves per game at 10.31 after logging 134 in 13 games.

He came to the Institute from Centenary College of Louisiana where he played a huge role in the development of the program in its transition to the NCAA Division III level. He oversaw all aspects of recruiting, coaching, budget management, academics and strength and conditioning.

Prior to Centenary, McDonald served as the head coach of the Louisiana State University women’s lacrosse club from 2012-15. He was in charge of team conditioning, execution of team meetings, fundraising, scheduling, travel and team practices. Over this span, the team grew in numbers and the Tigers earned a playoff berth in each of its first three years of existence. The club won the 2015 Texas Women’s Lacrosse League Division II conference championship and a berth to the national tournament.

For the previous eight years before his coaching tenure at LSU, McDonald served as an assistant or head coach at the high school or college level. He was an assistant for the Lafayette Hurricanes youth lacrosse club.

From 2009-12, McDonald was the head lacrosse coach and assistant football coach at University High School in Orlando, Florida. In his second year at the school, he was named the Metro Orlando Interscholastic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and a finalist for the Central Florida US Lacrosse Coach of the Year award. He concurrently served as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at nearby Rollins College in 2011 and 2012.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from LSU in 2006.  He received his master’s in athletic administration from Ohio University in December of 2012.

Casey and his wife, Ashley, have three children: Collin, Carsyn and Carolyn.
