Tyler Howard enters his first season as the Director of Athletic Equipment Services at VMI following his promotion in October of 2019. He served as the assistant director of athletic equipment services during the 2018-19 athletics season.
Howard came to the Institute by way of Bowling Green State University where he served as an equipment staff intern at Doyt Perry Stadium for the 2017-18 athletics season. In this role he assisted the head equipment manager in daily operations including the cleaning and repair of uniforms for football, softball, soccer, cross country and track and field. On top of football duties for both home and away games, he assisted the Stroh Center equipment manager with men’s and women’s basketball games and practices.
At Bowling Green he supervised a team of eight student managers in preparation and cleanup of practice and game areas and locker rooms, setting up drills for coaches, completing laundry chores and assisting with special projects. Another primary responsibility involved performing inventory of equipment and uniforms, working with coaches to determine needs and ordering necessary items. Other duties included resolving headset communications issues, organizing storage of equipment, teaching proper laundry usage and presenting a football helmet seminar to demonstrate proper methods of repair.
Prior to BGSU, Howard served as a student equipment manager for the football team at his alma mater Ohio University from 2014-17. In this role he worked directly with the offensive line setting up practice drills, repairing equipment and assisting the head equipment coach with errands. Named the head student manager as a senior, Howard trained student managers and served as a liaison between the managers and the head equipment manager.
During the summer of 2016 Howard served as an athletics and marketing intern for Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, facilitating tournaments including the MLB’s Elite Developmental Invitational Camp.
The prior summer of 2015 he served as a summer intern for the Chillicothe Paints Baseball Club in Chillicothe, Ohio, composing ticket packages, executing operational tasks and managing the team store during the game.
A native of Circleville, Ohio, Howard graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Ohio University in 2017.
